A reduction-oxidation reaction (or "redox" reaction) is where one species gives electrons to another. Whatever gives up the electrons is oxidized, and whatever accepts the electrons is reduced. In this demonstration, a thin piece of copper ribbon is placed between two slides amidst silver nitrate solution. Each copper atom will give up two of its electrons, becoming the copper (II) ion, and essentially dissolving. Each silver ion in the solution will accept one of the electrons, converting to solid silver, and growing off of the copper ribbon in a crystal form. This is all taking place at the microscopic level in real time. Isn't heavy metal...er...aren't heavy metals great?
