Down in the dales and valleys of Jasper & Banff, the coyotes appear, hunting for ground squirrels. The coyote is often mistaken for the wolf, another inhabitant of these parts. But the coyote is at least a third smaller. Its behaviour is best characterised as a dog hunting like a cat. A solitary hunter, its prey consists primarily of small animals. Coyotes hunt for larger prey, even deer, in groups. The whole pack takes part in these hunts. They use clever tactics to wear out their victim. Only then do they attack. Part of its behaviour is reminiscent of the wolf. Coyotes, also referred to as barking dogs, are primarily found near prairies. As man slowly wiped out the wolf, the coyote took its place. Coyotes are pure carnivores. Nowadays the coyote can be found throughout North America, from Alaska to Costa Rica and from the Atlantic to the Pacific. And here we have the wolf. Man did not like the animal and slowly but surely the number of wolves declined. In present-day Canada, the wolf can again be found in its old hunting grounds, except in the populated southern provinces.
