(12 Dec 2018) Iraqi activist Nadia Murad met with her country's president in Baghdad on Wednesday after receiving the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize for her advocacy on behalf of victims of wartime sexual violence. Murad, a member of Iraq's Yazidi minority, was among thousands of women and girls who were captured and forced into sexual slavery by Islamic State group militants in 2014. She became an activist on behalf of women and girls after escaping and finding refuge in Germany. Murad arrived in Baghdad from Stockholm on Wednesday, and was received by President Barham Salih and other dignitaries. Speaking to Salih and other officials at the As-Salam palace, Murad said she had come to Baghdad to "call upon the new Iraqi government to be a government for all Iraqis, regardless of their religion and doctrines." She also stressed the importance of restoring the dignity of victims of wartime sexual slavery and abuse.
