Mute swans breed in north central Europe and north central Asia. The Mute Swan is one of the heaviest flying birds, with males weighing more than 12kg, and females more than 11 kg. They live in well-sheltered bays, open marshes, lakes, and ponds. 'Swan' is the common gender term, but 'cob' for a male and 'pen' for a female are also used, as is 'cygnet' for the baby swans.
