Murang’a county government launches programme to promote fish ponds

Farmers in Murang’a County are now embracing fish farming as an alternative source of income following huge demand in the county. For many years, coffee and tea were the dominant economic generator, but fish farming is quickly becoming a big thing. The county has now launched a programme to promote the venture. The county currently has 2,300 fish farmers, who produce about 175,000 kilos of fish annually, earning them an estimated 70 million shillings. Murang'a is traditionally not a fish eating region but the rising number of fish ponds has boosted local consumption.
