Health Alert: Acetaminophen and back pain

CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- A report just released in the Journal Lancet had some surprising news about a common pain reliever,  acetaminophen, and back pain.

Researchers in the study were looking at acetaminophen and back pain specifically for recovery time.  The study was from the Associated Press out of London. 

Researchers found it was no better for recovery time than a fake pill, according to the study.  They looked at those who got a lower dose, a higher dose and a placebo.  It was found that recovery time was the same.  Those who got acetaminophen got better after 17 days and those who took dummy pills recovered after 16 days. 

This was looking specifically at back pain.  If a person was taking it for other purposes they should make sure to talk to their doctor.  If they were taking acetaminophen for back pain, however, they may want to ask their doctor about what could be recommended. 

Don't discontinue use on a single study, follow up is always needed.
