I thought it was time to record and upload something more raw. Details below the lyrics ---------------------------------------------- It's dead... dead in here It's dead.... dead in here This used to be a place of hope Where inspiration flowed It used to be..... But now I see It's dead in here It's dead... dead in here Scattered papers in the dust Old footprints are all that's left of us The curtain's drawn.... Our haven's gone It's dead... dead in here ----------------------------------------- I frequent a board over on harmony central that specializes in songwriting. Rather than sharing completed works, it is a work-in-progress oriented forum. Initially, it was intimidating posting crude demos of songs you know aren't anywhere near ready for airtime, but I can't say enough about how productive my time has been there. I've learned a great deal about all facets of songwriting; melody, lyrics, even production. I'll leave a link at the bottom of anyone is interested. Anyway, at the end of 2012, the site went through serious issues and it was a lucky day if it was even running. They've since fixed those problems, but had to rebuild it entirely from scratch in a format that isn't quite as welcoming as the old one was. Because of this, activity is lower than it used to be, which a member lamented in a thread titled "Sad to see it's so dead in here". Well, as you might imagine, one thing led to another and a creative challenge of using that title as the theme for a new song was thrown down. This is what I came up with. Truth be told, there is a great deal of inspiration drawn from the changes on this site as well. Youtube has evolved in the past couple years, and it seems that little of it is for the benefit of unknown artists. From making getting recent subscription uploads now a 4 step process to eliminating the contact group feature (after I had pared my friend list down to only those interested in receiving shares), every change seems to limit our exposure more and more. To put it into numbers, when I uploaded a song two years ago, I'd get 200 views in a week, 700 in a month and at least 1,000 if I sent out shares to a contact list of about 800. Now, I'm lucky to crack 200 even after sending 1,600 messages. Sometimes I wonder if it is worth the effort, but I won't stop writing and where else am I going to put all this stuff? Just collecting dust on my hard drive? No, I'll keep sending them up and also doing my best to ensure others are getting attention as well. As for the song itself, the video and the audio are from the same take. I then added some strategically placed delay and a smidge of reverb. On top of the mic recording, there is a supplemental track from the electric output of my guitar to ensure the picking stuff was properly captured. Thanks for listening and commenting. And for allowing me to whine and complain for a minute or two. ;-) Justin p.s. here is the link to the harmony central songwriting forum: http://www.harmonycentral.com/t5/Songwriting-Workshop/bd-p/acapella-37
