Filmed from Grand Rapids, MI, looking south towards Kalamazoo around 1:00 AM. Storms were 60 miles away in that direction. Camera doesn't really do it justice at this distance. Grainy and faint unfortunately. It was much better to watch in person. "Heat lightning" isn't a special type of lighting. It is ordinary lightning seen in a cumulonimbus cloud that is too far away to for any audible thunder to reach the viewer. These storms were being fueled by a very muggy atmosphere with dewpoints in the lower 70s and CAPE still near 2000 J/kg even after midnight.
