Jury convicts Evans Landscaping owner in federal wire fraud case

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A federal jury has found business owner Doug Evans guilty of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Evans defrauded Cincinnati and Ohio small business programs by creating a "front" company to get small business contracts.

According to the Department of Justice, Evans and his vice-president for Evans Landscaping created, controlled and operated a demolition company called Ergon Site Construction. They said Korey Jordan was the president and owner. However, Jordan did little work for Ergon, did not provide capital contributions, and had little, if any, control over the operations.

Evans paid Jordan through the Ergon payroll and Evans Landscaping employees handled the accounting and office management. Ergon's business office and address were on property owned by Evans or one of his companies, Evans controlled the vehicles and equipment in Ergon's name and Evans employees did virtually all the work.

However, Evans used Ergon to bid and receive more than 100 residential demolitions contracts with the City of Cincinnati, totaling nearly $2 million. Evans also bid on state projects, including public school and municipal projects, by claiming Ergon would take part.

Evans and and Jim Bailey were convicted on all charges after the month-long trial.
