Suspect arrested in 2001 bank robbery in Blanchester

BLANCHESTER, Ohio (WKRC) -- Police arrested a bank robbery suspect 14 years after the crime. 

Blanchester Police believe it was Jeremy DeHaas who robbed the National Bank and Trust on West Main Street on July 3, 2001. 

On that date in 2001, a thief gave a teller a note saying he had a bomb and she should empty her cash drawer. She did and the robber ran out the back door as a freight train passed. The bank's surveillance camera wasn't working. Police searched the area and the freight train but couldn't find a suspect. A fingerprint lifted from the note revealed no matches in the Automated Fingerprint Identification System. The case went cold. 

In July of 2013, Blanchester's police chief got a call from the Clinton County Sheriff's Office that someone indicated that Jeremy DeHaas was behind the bank robbery, during an unrelated investigation.

Blanchester Police and the FBI gathered evidence and interviewed new witnesses. In November of 2014, a grand jury indicted DeHaas on charges of aggravated robbery and theft. Then police had to track him down. 

On Saturday, Jan. 3, Reynoldsburg Police responded to a shoplifting call where a man stole several boxes of ammunition, then stole a car.  When Reynoldsburg Police stopped the car, they say they found DeHaas was behind the wheel. They learned he was wanted for the 2001 bank robbery. 

Blanchester Police said they'll pick up DeHaas once he completes his court appearances from the Reynoldsburg robbery.
