Power Restored To UNCA

A power failure at UNC Asheville forces university officials to close the campus. The Emergency Management Team kept lights on at the student center and dining hall with portable generators. Other buildings have back-up power. The outage happened Sunday night at a Duke Energy substation on the campus. UNCA officials say a raccoon entered the substation and shorted out a large transformer. Students lost power in their dorms, causing cellphones and laptops to shut down when batteries died. Some left the campus for coffee shops and businesses on nearby Merrimon Avenue with power and internet connections. Around noon, Duke Energy Progress completed the replacement of a transformer that had been damaged. UNC Asheville facilities personnel restored power and normal operations to campus buildings. Ramsey Library reopened at 1:30 p.m. and will remain open until 2 a.m. Campus Recreation facilities also have reopened and will follow their regular schedule until 11 p.m. Highsmith University Union and the Dining Hall are also open. Normal campus operations will resume tomorrow, Tuesday, Dec. 3, which is a pre-finals reading day for students.
