In the time it takes you and your child to lather up and sing the ABCs, you could help save your family from weeks of miserable cough, cold, aches, chills and fever. Hand washing is the easiest and number one way to protect the ones you love from infection all year, but particularly during viral and flu season. Hand washing is something we take very seriously at Nationwide Children's Hospital. It is our policy that anyone entering or leaving an inpatient hospital room, before and after providing care your child, clean their hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand gel. We encourage parents or families who do not see one of our staff washing their hands to speak up - hand hygiene is the number one way to stop the spread of infection. You can clean your hands properly in one of the following ways: - With alcohol-based hand gel, rubbing hands together until the gel has dried. - With soap and water, wetting hands first, then lathering well with soap and rinsing clean. A great guideline to use with your children is to sing "Happy Birthday" or "The ABC Song" while lathering. To learn more about how to protect yourself during flu season, visit http://bit.ly/VSERnb.
