Faobhar Chleas, or "edge feat," is a type of flourishing exercise from the fifth level of our broadsword curriculum. This exercise can be performed either solo or with a training partner as in this video. Although the actions are not choreographed, this is not a bout- all actions are completely committed, with no attempt to deceive or set up the opponent. This provides a margin of safety sufficient to protect the fencers when they are both experienced, practice the same style and know each other well, but should not be attempted in any other circumstance. The purpose of the edge feat is to display the art and skill of the fencers, so techniques may be improvised on the spot or may be more complex or risky than the techniques that would be used in a real bout.
