We begin this evening with the Anti-Fake News Bill 2018 that was tabled for its first reading in the Dewan Rakyat today, as the Government seeks to curb the dissemination of inaccurate news and putting in place deterrent measures. The proposed Act aims to protect the public from the rapid spread of fake news, while ensuring respect for the right of freedom of speech and expression under the Federal Constitution. Those found guilty under the Act can be fined up to RM500,000, or sentenced to a jail term of up to 10 years or both.
