Volunteers distribute Thanksgiving meals to families in need

SYCAMORE TOWNSHIP, OH. (WRKC) – After a quick blitz through Meijer in Oakley, a couple dozen volunteers distributed Thanksgiving Day meals to 140 families. Thanks to fundraising efforts of Matt Plapp and Dorron Hunter, more than 260 families will have a meal this year. This is the ninth year the two have helped families put food on the table.

“We started with 20 families and the more we talked about it, the more we enjoyed it, the smiles on people’s faces when they came and when they left,” said Hunter.

The shoppers filled the carts to the brim with all the trimmings spending nearly $12,000.

Each family receives; a turkey, a sack of potatoes, a bag of flour, two boxes of stuffing, butter, cranberries, yams, rolls, green beans, pumpkin pie, whip cream, cookies, turkey bags and a kids surprise.

“It’s priceless, it’s priceless, doing stuff like this is something I would instill in my son,” said volunteer Kevin Mack. “Not everybody can afford to go out and buy dinner for their family.”

Eric Nelson goes to the same gym as Plapp, he’s back to help shop and distribute for a second year.

"It's just a great experience, I bring my daughter with me and we do it as a family. Just to see the other families and how generous and grateful they are to us,” said Nelson.

After the shopping was complete the individual meals were packed up for the families. 140 to be distributed from Sycamore High School, 100 in Ludlow and 25 in Dayton, KY.

"I know this coming Thursday, they'll sit down for dinner and enjoy their families and not have those worries of what am I going to do about this, that. And that's why I do this,” said Hunter.

Donations came in from friends and family of Plapp and Hunter, plus strangers and businesses in the area.
