A heartfelt, emotionally truthful indie drama centred on the troubled life of a foster care worker. Grace (Brie Larson) is a tough yet compassionate supervisor at a home for troubled teenagers. She makes a good team with fellow counsellor Mason (John Gallagher Jr). But what they don't let on is that they're in a long-term relationship. Their oldest charge is Marcus (Keith Stanfield), an intense young black man who expresses himself through rap. He's about to turn 18 and is due for mandatory release. Grace also finds herself drawn to 15-year-old newcomer Jayden (Kaitlyn Dever) - a sassy, challenging, gifted girl with a propensity for self-harming. At the same time, Grace receives news that forces her to confront issues in her own past, and eventually find redemption. Expanded from his own short film of the same title, Destin Cretton's honest, empathetic and ultimately uplifting drama scrupulously avoids sentimentality.
