The Gifu University Graduate School of Medicine exhibited medical training software for medical students that it calls "Doctor Trainer" at the 2008 Autumn Innovation Japan exhibition held in Tokyo. The software was developed through collaboration between the university and private industries.

The Doctor Trainer software is medical navigation software that provides a learning environment in which medical students are able to learn from their mistakes and can be used over and over again by medical students to learn how to talk with patients and arrive at a differential diagnosis in a virtual environment.

Doctor Trainer features a roll playing engine, a natural conversation engine, and a facial expression engine, and couples those engines with medical information to provide virtual diagnostic situations.

The Doctor Trainer is an educational tool that assists students in the learning of necessary medical science. Next, the University plans to further expand the engine performance and target other students in the medical field including nurses, caregivers, pharmacists, and medical testing technicians.
