Suspect in grandmother's murder in Winton Hills arrested

WINTON HILLS, Ohio (Angenette Levy) -- DNA led police to a man that murdered a grandmother and shot her 12-year-old granddaughter during a burglary earlier this year, according to court papers filed Thursday. Cordaro McGhee faces charges of aggravated murder, felonious assault and burglary. McGhee broke into Jean Elliott's home in Winton Hills last May while her grandchildren were with her and shot her and one of the children, police said. Elliott died but her granddaughter survived. "She's doing ok. She's doing better. She's going through therapy. She's finally home with her mom and her sister and her stepfather," said Virginetta Bess, Elliott's niece. She also spoke about her aunt. "She was beautiful. She was happy. She would give you the clothes off her back, the shoes off her feet if you ever needed it so that's why it's sad that he took my aunt away and almost took my little cousin away."   Judge Bernie Bouchard set McGhee's bail at .5 million Thursday morning. According to court records, detectives got a "hit" on McGhee in the Combined DNA Index System or CODIS. Bess wanted to come face-to-face with the man accused of taking her aunt from her and wounding her young cousin. "I'm feeling good because they got him and his bond is set really high so we ain't got to worry about him coming out here and doing it to nobody else," Bess said. This is the second loss Virginetta Bess has suffered. Her son, Trayvon Everett, was murdered in 2013 in Avondale. His murder remains unsolved. McGhee remains in the Hamilton Co. Justice Center.
