Norman Rosenthal, M.D. (Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Georgetown University Medical School): American Indians in our country live with tremendous stress, much more than many other people and this is evident in a lot of different ways, for example, suicide is the second leading cause of death among young American Indians. American Indian women have the highest level of domestic violence of any women in the country. And 70% of adult American Indians suffer from type 2 diabetes. All of this is evidence that something is really wrong with their lifestyles and the stresses that they live with. Given what we know about TM as a stress reducer, it makes great sense that we should try and see if this enormously successful stress reducer that's helped so many other areas, could help these people who are in such urgent need of assistance.
