The mule deer (odocoileus hemionus) is a deer whose habitat is in the western half of North America. They are found from the Arctic Circle in the Yukon to northern Mexico. These deer have chosen the Grand Canyon for habitat.
The mule deer gets its name from its large prominent ears. It has a white tail with a black tip. A well-known subspecies of the mule deer is the black-tailed deer, which as its name suggests has an all black tail.
Mule Deer feed on a variety of different foods, including twigs, shoots, grasses, leaves, seeds and berries. The diet depends on the type of habitat in which they live, in more woodland areas a greater variety of food will be eaten than in desert areas.
Adult male mule deer are called bucks, adult females are called does, and young of both sexes are called fawns. Males have antlers, which are shed and regrown every year.

Het muildierhert (Odocoileus hemionus) is een Noord-Amerikaans hert. Hij is nauw verwant aan het witstaarthert (Odocoileus virginianus). Het muildierhert dankt zijn naam aan de grote oren, die doen denken aan die van een muildier. Ook het muildierhert kan zijn oren onafhankelijk van elkaar bewegen. Het hert eet 's zomers kruiden en bessen, en 's winters twijgen van naald- en loofbomen. Ook eet hij eikels en appels.
