The Mitchell family was as all-American as apple pie and ice cream. Margaret was a proud stay at home mom, taking care of Jake while Douglas worked each day as a Senior VP at Vault-Tec. His high position gave Douglass ample time to prepare for the coming nuclear holocaust, considering Vault-Tec had ironed out the date back in 2071. He was also able to embezzle corporate funds and misappropriate building materials to construct a cozy hideaway for his precious family. The War came, and life went on, relatively undisturbed. Margaret had taken up a minor Daytripper habit to ease the depression that comes from knowing your entire world and everyone you knew in it has been consumes in a titanic ball of nuclear fire. Douglas continued his drinking problem with gusto. Jake spent most of his time in his room, playing with his toys or working on models. Only a month or two into the Mitchell's stay, Jake was bitten by a rad roach and became became very ill. He did not live but for a few more days after. His parents buried him next to the tree with the little rope swing they had told him not to play on. Douglas and Margaret's life together continued. Life for the next many months became as empty and desolate as the dusty world that raged above their heads. One night, after bed, a group of irradiated survivors, starving, sick and dying, had managed to wander the endless maze of subway tunnels that lead to the house. Douglas and his wife bolted awake as the twin machine guns opened up with full force. The crisp, hollow ringing of endless gunfire shook the granite walls around them with their thrumming pulse. The terrible noise was almost enough to cover the desperate shrieks and cries of the wretched souls on the other side of the wall. It took about forty seconds for the guns to empty. It took two days for the screaming and moaning to stop. Douglas and Margaret were only able to bear one. On their last night together, Douglas poured a large drink while Margaret drew a bath.
