GILES COUNTY, Tenn.-- Giles County Sheriff Kyle Helton says the department is working a "huge" animal abuse case in which 55-60 horses and other animals were found malnourished. Officers with the department executed a search warrant at a Ragsdale Lane home just outside of Pulaski and found "multiple" horses in lots filled with up to a foot of mud, water, feces and urine. The horses were found to be malnourished, with "minimal hay." Two small "wean-ling horses" were also found locked inside a horse trailer with no water and standing in their own feces with only urine soaked hay to eat. One horse had to be euthanized due to severe malnourishment. Aside from the horses, officers found seven goats living in a dog pen filled with urine and feces. The owner of the animals -Jeffery Alan Mitchell, 50, has been charged with animal cruelty. Mitchell was convicted twice in 2009, making the current charges felonies. Volunteer Equine will now treat the animals and put those who become healthy enough with veternarian treatment up for adoption. Police state some more of the animals could be euthanized due to their poor health conditions.
