Those who know me know that I don't really shoot portraits all that often. Don't get me wrong - it's not because I don't appreciate this type of photography, but I'd much rather work with structures and shapes and patterns. I guess it's just how I'm made up. :)

However, I wanted to make an exception with my sister, Greta. Ever since moving to the other side of the country, I've realized just how much less I'll be able to see my family, all of whom live in New York City. So, when my sister ended up visiting me here, I wanted to make sure that I didn't squander the opportunity to create some of my own memories by photographing her.

I am sure that I'm one of those people who will, in some distant day, think to myself about how I wish I had more images of my family and friends. Hindsight always seems so clear, much more so than looking at the 'Here and Now'. We should all really take stock of what we had and what we used to have and no longer do so that we can truly utilize this wonderful gift of photography for posterity.

Ultimately, having the opportunity to photograph my sister was a very rewarding process. She is a beautiful girl and I'm lucky to have her in my life. I guess I felt that the best way to show this gratitude was by photographing her. Now to make my way back home to get images of my parents. :)

I put together the video below to go into more detail around the inspirational components of this image, as well as to walk you through the steps I took to process it and bring it to its final state.
