CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- Next to Thanksgiving nutrition experts say Super Bowl Sunday is the second biggest eating day of the year.

So if people want to enjoy the game, three choices can make a big difference: alcohol, chicken wings, and pizza. Much of what leads to the landmine for a person's waistline, according to registered dietitian Nancy Zwick, is a concept many people do on game day and don't even know it.

Zwick said, "It's called mindless eating. People just put the chip in and dip and before they know it they have consumed 5 to 1000 calories and not even realized it."

So her advice is to go easy on the alcohol, especially early in the day. The more people drink the less they have any willpower to pace themselves. Then when it comes to the traditional favorites remember that wings are much like fried butter. There's more fat often than meat especially when people dip them in blue cheese.

Zwick says pizza is often the better choice, believe it or not, when it comes to game day. But how people top that off could make a big difference in their nutrient and calorie density for the day.

"Pizza is a wonderful healthy food but we also know that is can be very, very high in calories," so Zwick suggests people make a toppings bar with individual crusts so guests can choose everything from turkey pepperoni, ham, or chicken, light cheeses, and every veggie.

The other big calorie landmines on game day tend to be dips with sour cream. Salsa and even guacamole are better options for fewer calories and good fats.
