Success across the board has encouraged Mercedes to venture into the competitive compact coupe segment. Drive it! looks at the sporty new Mercedes C-Class coupe. With its sport credentials, the C-Class is bound to consume more fuel than the prototypes that students are"racing"around the Lausitz-Ring racetrack in Germany.Drive it! will also be putting the current Jeep Wrangler through its paces, both on and off-road. Plus, we'll be going back in time to look at the Porsche 911 - a car developed at a time when the modern safety systems of today were just a dream. Present it! Mercedes C-Class CoupeFollowing on from the E-Class coupe, the CL and the CLS, Mercedes is entering the compact coupe class for the first time.Despite it being Mercedes'first attempt, the new C-Class has all the features synonymous with a sports coupe - a short front overhang, a long hood, a steeply raked windscreen and a sleek roofline. At the front, it may resemble the rest of the C-Class family, but it has features to make it stand out as a model in its own right. The cabin accommodates four in comfort thanks to individual seating and integrated head rests. Drive it tests the new 220CDI with its 125kW engine. Picture it! The Shell Eco-MarathonPromoting fuel efficiency, that's the goal that Shell has taken on with its Eco-Marathon.The competition is open not only to students in Europe but also from abroad and the teams can enter one of these categories: in the"Urban Concept"category, the design must incorporate practical features and be fit for use on the road. In the"Prototype"class, teams can really let their creativity run wild. For the first time, this year's event also featured a section specifically for electrically-powered vehicles in which 30 entrants battled it out. In the event's first outing back in 1985, all of the vehicles were powered by gasoline. This year, however, over half the field consisted of vehicles powered by alternative fuels. Test it! Jeep WranglerThe current Jeep Wrangler is the direct descendant of the original Willy MB Jeep from 1941.70 years of experience in the off-road sector has gone into the design of the current model. The Wrangler boasts a wealth of new features: a new body and interior, new engines, new safety features and new equipment. Drive it! takes the Wrangler Unlimited Sahara off-road and puts it through its paces. In the open country, the Wrangler makes light work of obstacles but can it conquer tarmac too? Compare it!"Active Brake Assist"systemsCars of today use the latest technology to keep their occupants from harm."Active Brake Assist"systems are just one example of how they do that. These systems are designed to significantly reduce the severity of collisions. They're able to recognize potentially dangerous situations and warn the driver or even intervene itself to bring the vehicle to a halt. What is this technology really capable of? To find out, Drive it! compares six different systems with the help of Germany's automobile association, the ADAC. Vintage! Porsche 911SThe 911 is THE iconic sports car and the raspy note from its air-cooled engine became its trademark. Two years after the 911 hit the showrooms, Porsche came out with the even more powerful 911S. Under the hood was a 2 liter motor pumping out 160 PS. It was enough to take car and driver to a top speed of over 220 km/h. The original design from 1963 was the work of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, who was just 28 years old at the time. The car's timeless silhouette still catches the eye today and provides the blueprint for all 911s that followed.
