Balsamorhiza is known commonly as balsamroots. Balsamroots are native to western North America.
They can be found scattered singly in open woods or in large patches in meadows,with a bright yellow flower on a single stalk high above the cluster of leaves. The name comes from the arrow-shaped leaves, along with the roots, which are said to have a balsam-like taste.
"Balsamorhiza" refers to the Balsam-like taste and smell of the root ("rhiza" in Greek), and "sagittata" is Latin for "arrow", as in "Sagittarius", the legendary archer.
These balsam roots are flowering in Yellowstone National Park.
