Our number of the day is 56 000 There were 56 000 thousand new jobs created in the economy between January and March this year. That's according to the latest employment figures released by Statistics South Africa. The figures are for the formal sector, excluding Agriculture. The manufacturing sector added 9 000 new jobs; the financial services sector created 4 000 new jobs and construction came in at 12 000 new jobs. That's despite overall economic output shrinking by 2. 2 percent in the same period weighed down by a 10 percent decline in mining output and a six and half percent decrease in manufacturing, especially of steel. The quarterly employment statistics show that employment increased from 9.78 million in December 2017 to 9.83 million in March 2018. However Stats SA's quarterly labour force survey, which reflects the growth in employment numbers across various sectors, released earlier this year showed that first quarter unemployment remained unchanged at 26.7%.
