By Yakov Eliashberg Abstract: Poincare's paper « Sur un théorème de géométrie », written shortly before his death, started a development which eventually led to creation of a new field of symplectic topology. In the talk I will highlight some milestones of this process. Note(s) Biographique(s) Born in 1946 in Russia, Yakov Eliashberg obtained his PhD at the Leningrad University in 1972. He started his career as a professor at Syktyvkar State University, Komi Republic of Russia. In 1988, he moved to the United States and has been a professor of mathematics at Stanford University since 1989. He is a recipient of Leningrad Mathematical Society prize in 1972, of Guggenheim Fellowship in 1995, of the American Mathematical Society Oswald Veblen Prize in Geometry in 2001. In 2003 Eliashberg was elected to the USA National Academy of Sciences, and in 2009 received Doctorat Honoris Causa from the ENS Lyon.
