Noah Todd, a senior mechanical engineering student at the University of Maryland, and classmates have developed an underwater microphone that can detect oyster poaching in the Chesapeake Bay. Maryland farmers can potentially lose years of work and thousands of dollars in profit when a poacher illegally dredges their oyster beds. Todd hopes that the device he and his group created will not only help to protect the Chesapeake, but will go on to protect other preservations in similar underwater ecosystems.
