The white immigrants call this area Ayers Rock. The aborigines call it Uluru. The landscape in the Northern Territory has drastically changed over the past hundred years. Luckily there are still plenty of plants and animals alive from back then. Nowadays the biggest problem is the uneven natural balance in this nature. Australia, like the rest of the world has not escaped human influence. It was the Europeans in particular who turned things upside down. They brought plants and animals from Europe which did not belong here.
Until the Europeans arrived it was the aborigines who ruled. They had been here for tens of thousands of years and with all their special experience they lived in perfect harmony with their natural environment.
There are more birds that live in and off the desert than you would think. You hardly see them during the warmest part of the day, the temperature is too high then. This is true for most of the desert animals.
