As part of Democracy International's Danube Democracy Rally, we had organised a seminar at the United Nations in Vienna to learn about how the United Nations can become more democratic. Alfred de Zayas, UN independent expert on the promotion of a democratic and equitable international order, called for direct democracy on the global level with special regard to the UN system. In his view there should be global opinion polling (on issues such as the NSA surveillance) as well as world referenda.
