(16 Nov 2018) Meghan McCain, daughter of deceased US Senator John McCain, strongly criticised Russian President Vladimir Putin in London on Thursday, as she accepted an award on behalf of her father.
The 2018 Human Rights award, presented on behalf of the global Magnitsky Justice Campaign, was given for John McCain "in recognition that his legacy will long continue to inspire all of those who are standing up for liberty and justice."
McCain died in August of brain cancer at the age of 81.
He was said to have been selected for the honour for his support for the 2012 Magnitsky Act, which imposed sanctions on Russia following the death of human rights lawyer Sergei Magnitsky.
"John McCain defended and vindicated the memory of ordinary men and women with integrity, like Sergei Magnitsky. Vadimir Putin has them murdered. John McCain was a strong man. Vladimir Putin is a weak man's idea of a strong man," Meghan McCain told those gathered at the award ceremony.
