(13 Mar 1984) FE CAS USA/AFRICA/S.AMERICA: A group of US volunteers have spent
13038405 10 years planning what must rank as one of the world's most
1"VT+BVU unusual hospitals - the "Project Orbis" is housed in an
old DC-8 and has a crew of eight. The crew includes
an opthalmologist, a nurse, two doctors, engineers and a
pilot and the plane flies to host cities all over the
world, treating patients with serious eye disorders, using
surgeons and specialists from the US and other countries
to supplement the skills of local doctors. The airliner
has an operating room where complicated surgery is carried
out. There is also a treatment room with the latest laser
and sonic equipment and an 18-seat classroom with TV monitors
and headsets for two-way discussions between the surgeons and
local medical staff who are able to learn about microsurgery
techniques. Hundreds of people have had their sight restored
through "Project Orbis".
