Sagua La Grande safeguards Chinese-Cuban artist's legacy

Cuba has a reputation for being the birthplace and the refuge of artists. One of the most famous of these was Wilfredo Lam, born in the sunny, inland town of Sagua La Grande. Lam was the son of a Chinese immigrant and a Cuban woman. Lam was born in a humble wooden house in 1902, just a few blocks from the town's central park. In one of the corners of this same park, a small, brightly colored building now houses the Wifredo Lam Art Gallery, where several of the painter's original works can be found. His most famous painting is La Jungla, The Jungle, a surreal work that depicts a number of figures wearing African masks standing against a backdrop of sugar cane fields. Some believe it a commentary on Cuba's colonial, slave-owning past.
