When a disc, which lies between the bones of the spinal column, herniates or protrudes, it can put pressure on a nerve, causing pain in an arm or leg. Elizabeth Yu, MD, a spine surgeon at Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center, believes in maximizing non-operative treatment first before considering surgery. However, if surgery is required, she specializes in minimally invasive surgical techniques, including the microdiscectomy, which involves removal of the damaged disc through a small one-inch incision.
