FCC Considers Selling Free TV Spectrum -- Sky Arnold

Mt. Juliet, Tenn ---  Around 3 years ago, Rebekah Layne ditched cable and started watching tv over the airwaves.

"It would up being really expensive we just couldn't afford to do it," said Layne. "On this TV we get a good 22 channels and that's enough for us really."

There's a real question though whether she'll continue to have that many.

Sometime next year the FCC is expected to start auctioning off some of the channels currently used by television stations.

That spectrum would be handed over to cell phone providers who need it to handle all the data that's now being sent by smart phones.

Last Year FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said the switch is needed to ensure the United States remains a tech leader.
    
 "What we are is we're pro-America.  We are pro how do you use spectrum most efficiently for the common good of this nation," said Wheeler.

At this point the auction is supposed to be voluntary but Tennessee Association of Broadcasters President Whit Adamson worries it won't stay that way.

Adamson worries if enough stations don't volunteer to give up spectrum the FCC will take it. 
 
"So far nobody is raising their hand that I know of and said this is for me.  I'm here and I'm getting out," said Adamson.

Either way it could seriously impact over the air television.

Adamson says viewers like Layne could lose a few channels or their signal might not be as good.

"We depend on the news and weather. Especially the weather when we have bad storms we've had several storms this year alone," said Layne.
