Iowa is divided into seven main landform regions. Each landform has a unique geologic history that that shapes the way it looks. The Paleozoic Plateau landform region in northeast Iowa is characterized by shallow, exposed bedrock, the result of fewer glacier events than other areas of Iowa. The Alluvial Plains landform regions on the east and west border of the state are formed by the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, sculpting Iowa’s landscape and depositing sediment and clay since the glaciers melted away.
