Here's a sample video from a Nikon D5000 for comparing video quality with other cameras and smartphones. This was taken in the same environment as the videos we take with other gadgets for easier comparison. The Nikon D5000 takes video at 720p 24FPS with mono 11kHz sound. The camera saves these files in .AVI format and you can manually zoom or focus while in video - but you will hear the sounds of operation. Shot with the Nikon 18-55 VR kit lens. The main advantage of a DSLR camera for images and video would be the capability of shallow DoF effects and large sensor noise capabilities. This particular DSLR's disadvantage for video would be that it lacks an external mic input, only mono sound recording, no autofocus in video, and you can hear the zoom and focus during operation. (This is why most DSLR video gets edited to remove the sound and then replaced with some music.)
