According to conventional history, the Vikings were opportunistic thugs who were only interested in easy plunder. However, this is the history as written by post-Christianized, post Romanized Europe. The Vikings were the last indigenous polytheists in Europe. The indigenous polytheist animists in Europe had been enslaved, suffered genocidal holocaust and religious genocide by the Romans and later the Holy Roman Empire for hundreds of years. After the Massacre of Verden where 4500 Saxon polytheists were slaughtered because of their religion, word of the impending holocaust made its way into Scandinavia. Economically strangled and now in danger of losing their 50,000 year old indigenous religion and culture, the Vikings struck out against Christian monasteries and then founded the last polythiest kingdom in Europe. They were the last of the Teutonic Polytheists who left us the sacred "norse" myths that we now use to reconstruct the traditions of Polytheist North Western Europe.
