President Abbas calls for multilateral 'mechanism' for peace talks with Israel

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is calling for a multilateral mechanism to oversee the peace process with Israel. Speaking at the United Nations Security Council meeting Abbas however said that this was not a rejection of negotiations or a call for violence. He called for the convening of an international peace conference by mid-2018 to negotiate a peace deal. The Palestinian leader blamed the United States unilateral mover to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, for the current deadlock in peace efforts. He also urged the United Nations to recognize the state of Palestine as a full UN member-state.
