Already exhausted from the shopping, the whole payment process is a burdensome chore. One kiss between your smartphone and the Point of Sale terminal and the payment is done! You are at a beer vending machine and your hands can't wait to wrap around a cold beer. Getting your money card out of your purse to swipe is a drag. You're most likely holding your smartphone in your hand. One kiss between your smartphone and the vending machine, and you have your beer! But how does this kiss work? While a kiss between humans transfers love and affection, a kiss between gadgets transfers information. When your smartphone kisses another gadget such as a kiosk, sensors within the smartphone detect physical touch and transmit the time of touch, location of the smartphone and it's ID to a server. At the same time, the kiosk also transmits it's own unique ID to the server. The server correlates these two pieces of information and establishes that a kiss has taken place between these two devices. And depending on the context, the server automatically completes the transaction. So when your smartphone kisses the POS terminal, the total amount payable is sent to the server from the POS terminal, while your smartphone sends your account information. The server already knows the location of the POS terminal from its unique ID and so can automatically transfer the amount from your account to that of the store. And in case of the beer vending machine, when your smartphone kisses the vending machine, the server automatically verifies from the ID of the smartphone that the user is of legal age to buy beer and directs the vending machine to dispense the beer. Thanks to Google, gadgets can now get physically intimate with each other. And while the gadgets derive pleasure from the kiss, the human owners of these gadgets stand to gain a lot of benefits.
