Forget the question about why you're not a Christian, let's zero in on the crux of the problem: is subjectivity required for suffering to exist or not? I say yes, because until there is subjectivity there is no sense of wanting, no sense of being "subjected" to any pain. That animals can move themselves and rocks cannot is precisely why animals seem to be inhabited by souls. A soul is a subjectivity, God become a part rather than the whole. Only beings with souls (ie, organisms) can experience suffering. So to love one's neighbor as one loves oneself is to recognize a part of yourselves in them. It is to see that the soul is really one, that God is made whole only when all individual beings love each other, when the many become the one. This is why Christ's first commandment is that we love God: he means love the souls of your neighbors. Once you have done this, once you have made God whole again through the love between all souls, you have already loved your neighbor as yourself.
