Sword and Dirk: Not all Highlanders carried a targe. The sword and dirk was a common combination. The dirk can be used to discourage the opponent from closing in, to trap and control the opponents sword, to stab the opponent, to disarm the opponent, or even to force him to stab himself with his own sword.
