It makes sense to assume the world wasn't created as it exists today 6000 years ago. It's much more likely to have evolved over billions of years to its present state. But the exact mechanism and purpose of this evolutionary journey are unknown. Darwin's theory accounts for a very small portion of what we observe in nature today, especially considering nature on a cosmic scale. But even biologically, the "survival of the fittest" metaphor leaves much to be desired. Natural selection alone does not account for the diversity of life on earth. There must be other aspects involved in the process (see "natural drift" for starters).
