Sheriff's Office STARR 3 Helicopter Rescues Injured Biker

On Saturday, June 3, 2017, at approximately 12:53 PM, Office of the Sheriff STARR 3 helicopter overheard a call on the radio for Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (CON Fire) of an injured mountain biker near North Peak Trail on Mt. Diablo. STARR 3 responded and within minutes located the injured mountain biker approximately six miles up North Peak Trail. STARR 3 landed nearby and deployed the Air Support Unit Sergeant and a CON Fire Captain/Paramedic to evaluate the victim. CON Fire Engine #6 personnel responded and staged just off Mitchel Canyon Staging Area. Due to the victim's injuries (possible broken left leg) and the extended time it would take to transport the patient out on moderately steep and unstable fire trails, the CON Fire Captain/Paramedic requested STARR 3 short-haul the victim to awaiting medical units. The Tactical Flight Officer set up STARR 3 for short-haul. The victim was extracted via short-haul to an ambulance and transported to the hospital for further treatment.
