They require a creative mindset, a willingness to look outside the lines, think outside the box. But more than that, puns take peoples' tendency to run on automatic, to take the world for granted, and turns it on its head. To my way of thinking, that's a very important thing to do; the world's greatest thinkers are people who've challenged the status quo, stepped outside what we "know" to see what we've missed, forgotten, or outright denied, and puns are a form of humor that does specifically this. For my money, puns are a sign of a great thinker, one who does not take anything for granted, and that makes them one of the highest forms of humor.
