Rinpoche began by explaining that by correctly following the virtuous friend it purifies so many eons of negative karma. Before practicing Lama Chopa we have to know the importance and reasons and how to correctly follow the virtuous friend. Rinpoche recounted when he made an offering to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, then he had a dream that night and his meditation experience the next morning. This was due to the blessing of pleasing the guru. Rinpoche explained that when one experiences great or small hardships when you are working for sentient beings, a dharma project or following the gurus advice, this is a sign of purification and something to rejoice in and not to look it as bad. Rinpoche explained that buddha manifests in whatever form that can benefit sentient beings. All the past, present and future buddhas came from the guru. Before the guru there is no buddha therefore cherish the guru as more precious than the numberless buddhas, past, present and future. So we must follow the advice of the guru and cherish the guru and regard as more exalted than all the buddhas. Without the guru then the holy action of the buddhas cannot be received in the mental continuum. Therefore, it is most important to have a guru and follow the advice of the guru.
