Warren County's Meals on Wheels program receives funding for 260 hot meals a week, but thanks to donations and volunteers it serves over 800. Some of the county's top politicians are helping to feed the hungry. Hot biscuits from the oven. It's where retired teacher Nancy Mayfield begins serving up lunch for about 160 neighbors in need."Because you know there are people out there who need us every day," says Mayfield. "We're trying to help them out just a little bit at a time."Along with those biscuits, the menu includes sausage gravy, vegetables, mashed potatoes and fruit. Volunteers help prepare the meals and use their own cars for deliveries. At $3.69 a gallon, and daily trips that can total over 30 miles, it's no small gesture. Morrison Mayor Sue Anderson is there several times a week."The feeling that you get from doing it, it's worth every penny," says Anderson. "Every penny."Wednesday, McMinnville Mayor Norman Rone was in the Meals on Wheels kitchen too. He filled bags with heated rice to help keep the food warm and went along as Program Director Martha Pepper took a meal to Troy Farless."Sometimes it's the only meal a lot of senior citizens get and people that's disabled," says Farless.County Mayor John Pelham did the honors at Christine Shield's house. She and her husband are both over 80 and unable to get out on their own."I don't know what I'd have done without 'em because I don't have any help," says Shields.Martha Pepper says couples like that is what Meals on Wheels is all about."What we're really trying to do is keep our people, our clients out of nursing homes as long as we can," says Pepper. In some cases, a hot meal goes a long way. Martha Pepper says Warren County's Meals program couldn't do it without its volunteers. In addition to people, she says 3 local industries provide grants to help keep them in business.
