After the initial Salmon Run shift on Ruins of Ark Polaris, we got another one--this time with all random weapons. That's my favorite kind of Salmon Run, but I also know that this is the sort of Salmon Run many others dread. Of course, that gives me reason to dread it too, not because of me getting weapons I'm not used to (I don't have a main, so there are no weapons I'm not used to), but because of my teammates getting weapons they're not used to. (Incidentally, I've been told that, because I use every weapon in this game, I am not that great with any weapon, but I am the rare person who can take advantage of Splatoon competitions' rules that you can change weapons after a match to counterpick.) Stage: Ruins of Ark Polaris Weapons: ?, ?, ?, ? In the last Salmon Run video, I gave a brief rundown of what people have noticed about this stage as far as the lore goes, and there is a lot. This time, I'm going to talk about the layout itself, at least my thoughts on it. And hey, this is the last stage in Splatoon 2. It deserves at least another video. Ruins of Ark Polaris manages to keep distinct from the other four Salmon Run stages in two ways, not including the inkrails. The first is that this is the most vertically oriented Salmon Run stage, which can make it tricky to locate Salmonids when they appear due to the basket being at the very top of the stage, the terrain obscuring the Salmonids. In particular, initially throwing me off were the Stingers, as this stage is so tall that the Stingers are actually shooting up. I didn't realize that at first, and it caused me to go in the wrong direction to get rid of them. The other thing is that, because this stage is so vertical, it has the smallest high tide and the largest low tide. of any of the Salmon Run stages. You'll see a lot of high tide in this video, which is pretty much just the area immediately around the egg basket and a few adjacent ramps. Low tide opens up a pretty vast area facing the city (that's how you can tell which way to go when it's low tide--look for the city and head towards it), and this area is so large that it has its own set of inkrails. Incidentally, it also has the closest Salmonid spawn area to the basket, with one such place being right behind it. This is both a blessing and a curse in that it's a quick way to gather Golden Eggs but also means the basket area can become very overwhelming very fast. One minor, third difference is that each player gets his or her own spawn point, with each participant facing a different direction. It throws me off sometimes, because where I need to go varies between matches, especially if it's low tide. Match #1 Special Weapon: Splashdown Wave 1: Grizzco Slosher - High tide (Glowflies) Wave 2: Goo Tuber - High tide Wave 3: Octobrush - High tide You'll see the dangers of how cramped this place is during high tide, and not just because I was given an unfavorable weapon every round. Normally, the Grizzco Slosher is incredibly useful for mowing down groups of Salmonids, but that trait isn't useful if the Chums during the Glowflies rush are very low on HP anyway and it takes four shots before you have to refill your ink. Match #2 Special Weapon: Sting Ray Wave 1: Grizzco Slosher - Medium tide Wave 2: Grizzco Slosher - Low tide Wave 3: Range Blaster - Medium tide One thing I see few people do is to turn around a Drizzler's missile such that it points the Ink Storm away from the middle or from the basket. You'll see I do this any time I take on a Drizzler, but sometimes, they appear in places where I put myself in great danger in doing so. What happened in Wave 2 was one such case and is part of why that point of Salmonid origin by the basket is a very tough one to deal with. Match #3 Special Weapon: Inkjet Wave 1: Aerospray RG - Medium tide Wave 2: Slosher - Low tide Wave 3: Squeezer - Medium tide According t the end-of-game statistics, xtramoist executed 13 rescues in this match. That's definitely MVP material.
