This is my guinea pig, Splodge, on Saturday, February 9th 2008. He's five and a half (pretty old for a guinea pig, I guess) and has been sick for the past few days with what I believe to be a bad tooth.

We took him into the vet on Friday, but they refused to sedate him in order to find out what was wrong, since he was "so healthy". Not really surprising that they thought this, considering he was apparently eating and drinking all the time that he was there!

One good thing did come out of his trip to the vet though. We have always given Splodge his water in a bottle, which he never liked using all that much. But the vet gave him a water bowl and Splodge has had a GREAT weekend using one here at home, and running around the house more than ever.

However, he was living on borrowed time. His tooth (or whatever it is) suddenly took a turn for the worse this evening (Monday), and he can't eat or drink a thing. Hence, I'm sitting on the sofa with him on my lap right now (5am) with no thought of going to bed. The vet opens at 9am,and I'm definitely going to have to take Splodge and get him put down then, even if he makes it through the next four hours.

This video honestly doesn't do him justice, what with him being sick anyway, and the terrible lighting in our living room. He has such a lovely personality, and beautiful markings in real life. He's been such a wonderful friend to me during the last half-decade, and I shall be eternally grateful for that, whatever the next few hours may bring.

This is my first ever Youtube video and it took me eight hours to upload on dial-up. I hope you can spare just 90 seconds of your time in order to watch this film, and spare a thought for one of the sweetest little guinea pigs who has ever lived.

*EDIT: FEB 14TH 08* As it turned out, Splodge ended up having the procedure on Tuesday, and although they attempted to sort out his problem teeth, and he did wake up afterwards, he never really got over the anaesthetic, and wasn't able to eat or drink yesterday. He kept falling over too, which was horrible to watch, and must have been even more horrible for him, especially since he didn't seem to understand that he was ill, and kept trying to run around the floor as normal.

He was much worse this morning, so I took him to the vet and had him put to sleep. He died peacefully in my arms at 11.30. RIP, Little Splodger. Gone from my arms, but forever in my heart. I shall never forget you. xxx
